Supreme Court forces states to make a big Medicaid decision

If anyone can claim the title of "most surprised" by Thursday's Supreme Court ruling — in which the justices upheld the health reform law — it might be Matt Salo.

He directs the National Association of Medicaid Directors in Washington. Salo had no inkling that the court would make the law's expansion of Medicaid to 17 million Americans an option, rather than a requirement.

The Republican turn against universal health insurance

In 2007, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina sent a letter to President George W. Bush.

DeMint said he would like to work with Bush to pass legislation that would "ensure that all Americans would have affordable, quality, private health coverage, while protecting current government programs. We believe the health care system cannot be fixed without providing solutions for everyone. Otherwise, the costs of those without insurance will continue to be shifted to those who do have coverage."

Western wildfires are getting worse. Why?

It's been an ugly week in Colorado Springs, as firefighters struggled to contain a massive fire that has torched more than 350 homes, forced more than 32,000 residents to flee and killed at least two people. The inferno is one of more than half a dozen large fires currently raging out West.
